AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer is the foundation of the AGGRAND natural lawn care program.  You can choose either the Organic Series 4-3-3 which is certified organic, or choose the biobased all-natural which is essentially the same as the Organic Series except not certified.

Read our Pet Safe Lawn Fertilizer page for details.

This is why the organic fertilizers will outperform the chemical fertilizers.

Nitrogen and phosphate are present in all ecosystems and nature knows how to hold them and make them readily available when they are needed.  That is why we need to use natural forms of nitrogen and phosphate.

High numbers of chemical fertilizers vs. low numbers in a safe lawn fertilizer.

You might be wondering right now….. why so low?  Why only 4-3-3 on these macronutrients?  In the Spring, for instance, if you have used conventional chemical lawn fertilizers, you might have purchased a 20-5-10 combination of nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, respectively.  The answer is the AGGRAND fertilizers are all natural, a biobased combination that is mighty effective.    Though the kelp is already in the AGGRAND 4-3-3, you can add more of the kelp through AGGRAND Kelp with Sulfate of Potash, which is the 0-0-8.  You might choose some lime for your newly planted lawn, read another article we wrote here on using lime as a lawn fertilizer, which it is not………  If you are low on phosphorus, there is the AGGRAND Bonemeal at 0-12-0 which will last for years to come once applied in combination with your AGGRAND Fertilizer.

So, or those who need to know, those numbers represent the three elements or macronutrients of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) that are often required in larger quantities than are made available through the lawn’s natural soil processes.  Especially since we haul away the leaves, grass clippings, pine cones and acorns, while even the water sources often leach these macronutrients and too often chemical fertilizers have been used for decades.  A safe lawn fertilizer from kelp and fish is an answer.

AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 contains kelp and fish, potent macro and micronutrient sources.  Many of the nutrients are in chelated form which holds them in reserve until needed.  Plants get the nutrients they need when they need them.  So you have, in AGGRAND, both fast-release and controlled-release nutrients for your lawn fertilizer.

Pollution from lawn fertilizer – or why go to an all natural lawn fertilizer?

We don’t think about this much, not if we live in an area where the world seems green and blue, life is good.  But our neighbors in states like Maryland, they know what it is like to have the lawn fertilizer issue take hold of their environment and destroy their bay.  “Maryland’s new lawn fertilizer law is designed to protect the Chesapeake Bay from excess nutrients entering its waters from a variety of urban sources, including golf courses, parks, recreation areas, athletic fields, businesses and hundreds of thousands of suburban and urban lawns.  Nutrient —primarily nitrogen and phosphorus—are key ingredients in lawn fertilizer.  When it rains, excess nutrients can wash off the land and into the streams and rivers that feed the Chesapeake Bay.  Once in our waterways, excess fertilizers contribute to the growth of algae blooms that block sunlight from reaching Bay grasses, rob the water of oxygen and threaten underwater life.”  from the Maryland Lawn Fertilizer Law pdfIn Maryland, about 44 percent of the fertilizers sold are for lawns alone.  And these issues are arising everywhere.  This is one way we can all contribute to a more stable environment and clean water resources.

Here are your issues when you choose chemical fertilizers or your lawn does not have the necessary nutrients.

  • Conventional fertilizers supply nitrogen as a salt.  Salts dissolve quickly in soil, releasing nitrogen which encourages weed growth.  In fact, a late-season nitrogen spike specifically favors crabgrass.

    green lawn fertilizer

AGGRAND offers organic green safe lawn fertilizers, USDA biobased green fertilizers and simply all natural and sustainable green fertilizers. A combination for whatever your growing application needs will be safe and effective.

  • Lawn grasses respond to a nitrogen spike by producing excessive top growth instead of storing carbohydrates.  Lawns with poor carbohydrate reserves go dormant during drought or other stressful times.
  • Rapid fertilizer release also allows nitrogen to leach through the soil which pollutes ground and surface waters.
  • Salt-based fertilizers toxify the soil which reduces soil microbe and earthworm populations, and consequently reduces nutrient cycling, decreases soil organic matter content, increases soil compaction and damages soil structure.
  • Chemical fertilizers are likely to burn the grass and roots.
  • Controlled-release fertilizers may not work on cold soil.
  • To name a few.

AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 and the others supply many of lawn nutrients as organic compounds, such as carbohydrates and proteins.  This is safe for your family, pets and the environment.  These water insoluble compounds are held in the soil until microbes and other organisms digest them, “time-releasing” plant nutrients, with no leaching, no pollution.

More benefits — AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 helps lawns develop deep root systems with proportional top growth by supplying nitrogen as part of a balance of nutrients.  Due to its balanced growth, the natural lawn resists disease, insects and drought much more successfully than lawns treated with chemical fertilizers.  Naturally-managed lawns cycle nutrients efficiently, preventing thatch build-up.  In fact, recycling thatch actually gives the lawn an extra two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet over the growing season – a nice little boost.  Finally, natural lawns require less mowing than high-nitrogen lawns.

In a nutshell – you get these choices in lawn fertilizers…… safe or potentially harmful and just not good enough.

  1. ORGANIC and BIOBASED — Natural lawns depend on fixation and release of nutrients by soil microbes to regulate soil fertility.  Nutrients that are not directly taken up by the grass are stored and released slowly in proportions that promote healthy growth.
  2. CHEMICALS — Conventional lawn care practices may cause micronutrient deficiencies and inefficient nitrogen usage.  Plants take up nitrogen and micronutrients in a fixed proportion, so when nitrogen is highly abundant, micronutrients should be, too.  Most commercial fertilizers don’t supply micronutrients, so lawns may suffer micronutrient deficiencies and often fail to use all the supplied nitrogen.

In using chemical fertilizers, also called traditional lawn fertilization, these unnatural practices can lead to surface and groundwater pollution due to the loss of the fertilizer just applied to the lawn.  Even when applied at the recommended rates, these issues lead to nitrogen and phosphate loading in surface waters or water pollution in the neighborhood then the area.  This happens because of …….

  • heavy rains
  • too much irrigation of the lawn soon after application
  • not calibrating fertilizer through the drop spreaders or throwing fertilizer on lawns by hand.

More issues prevail.  Since prevailing lawn care practices of  conventional fertilizers depend on high rates of nitrogen input via dissolved inorganic salts, which promotes an excessive leaf development to root reserve ratio.  Such over-abundant top growth is easy prey for disease-causing organisms and insects, while the shallow root system can’t store the reserves to cope with drought stress.  Heavy, excessive top growth also leads to an excessive amount of clippings, which outstrip the ability of soil organisms to break down dead materials, leading to thatch build-up, increased disease risk and unsightly appearance.  Finally, all that top growth needs frequent mowing.  And yes, you have thatch for organic decomposition, but no doubt entirely too much.  Unless you are building a compost.  In which case AGGRAND fertilizers will assist n the decomposition of that too.

Together, excessive nitrogen and salt will harm earthworms and soil microbes, plus burn foliage.  While natural lawn fertilizers like AGGRAND allow soils to return to more natural pH, salinity and overall chemical and physical balance, encouraging the return of earthworms and microbes.

While banning the application of certain nutrients can reduce pollution problems, a more feasible solution is the use of more sustainable practices and natural products.  The reason you are searching out a safe lawn fertilizer.

Ways to create a sustainable, safe lawn fertilizer system, one, two.

  1. Recycling of nutrients through the return of grass clippings, even some leaf mulching, such as using a mulching mower, stimulates soil biological activity and supplies at least two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year without causing any pollution.
  2. Applying low levels of natural nutrients such as fish, kelp, humates and corn gluten meal which stimulates the proliferation of microbes and earthworms, which readily consume nutrients before they can reach lakes.   As the creatures in the soil multiply, they excrete nutrients and die or are consumed, digested and excreted by other organisms, slowly releasing nutrients as plants need them.

Make certain all the macronutrients are supplied naturally through your lawn fertilizer.  This is what they do, one by one…..

NITROGEN –  While most of the lawn nitrogen is present already from the organic matter, such as decomposition of lawn clippings, plant roots and organic matter, you might realize you need a boost.  You can see the need, even without the soil analysis.  Adequate nitrogen will produce the vigorous grass growth and green color.  But you need to apply the right balance.   If there is too little nitrogen there will be slow growth, the possible diseases have a better chance of developing, there can be yellowing and a thinning of your lawn. all this increasing the weed growth.  If there is too much nitrogen then the lawn can experience excessive growth while the root growth is reduced.  There will also be low carbohydrate reserves.   The lawn will have increased susceptibility to some diseases and poor tolerance of environmental stress.  The other factor you need to know… as the nitrogen of organic matter is broken down to ammonium and nitrate so it can be absorbed, these are often lost through sandy soils and even leached away by excessive rain in the clay soils or converted to be lost in the atmospheric gases.

PHOSPHORUS – For stimulating early root growth and plant vigor, your lawn needs this macronutrient but it is usually all either bound tightly to soil particles or lost through the surface runoff and erosion.    If you have a soil analysis done, you may find your lawn soil is naturally high in phosphorus which is usually good to go, providing many years of sufficient phosphorus for vigorous lawn growth.  But, if your soil is low in phosphorus, then you have a problem in getting the macronutrient to the root zone, since it is best to add this prior to seeding or sodding.  When added after, both the large ground powders and the chemical variations of phosphorus will move into the lakes and streams.  Pet safe lawn fertilizer - featuring a Newfoundland in a hat named BearBear.

POTASSIUM – Important for synthesis of plants plus to regulate physiological processes such as the heat and cold tolerance and the more efficient use of nitrogen by the plant.  Lawns deficient in potassium are prone to increased turf grass diseases and the tolerance to environmental stresses is reduced.  Since potassium is found on soil particle surfaces and it moves very little in most soils, except sandy soils where it is able to move out of the root zone.

You can choose these three macronutrients in a bag of chemical fertilizer or through the AGGRAND all natural, even organic where needed, lawn fertilizers.  Here is what your choice determines.

Comparing natural lawn fertilizer to chemical fertilizer.

This simple comparison of natural and chemical fertilizer shows that one homeowner applies 30-5-10 fertilizer to his lawn at 20 pounds per 5,000 square feet.  His neighbor applies one quart (2.3 pounds) of fish kelp humate fertilizer per 5,000 square feet.Test bentgrass golf course turf in drought conditions. Liquid natural fertilizer vs. chemical fertilizers.

  • The natural fertilizer puts .0184 pounds of nitrogen and .013 pounds of phosphate per 1,000 square feet into the soil, and the naturally-fertilized lawn is more drought and pest resistant and requires less irrigation because it uses less water.  This is a natural and safe lawn fertilizer that stimulates biological activity, creating stable soil aggregates that enable the roots to go deeper and develop better, keeping nutrients in the root zone.
  • The chemical fertilizer, on the other hand, puts 1.2 pounds of nitrogen and .2 pounds of phosphate per 1,000 square feet into the soil.  This is 65 times more nitrogen and 15 times more phosphate than the natural fertilizer.  Because the grass relies on the chemical to supply the nutrients, the chemically fertilized lawn uses more water and requires constant irrigation.  In addition, the chemical toxifies the soil, inhibiting biological activity and leading to compacted soil and an unhealthy root environment.  Most of the nutrients are free to flow over the compacted surface, into the surface water or past the restricted root zone into the ground water.  Research shows that up to 96 percent of high analysis fertilizers are not taken up by plants.

Like we said, nitrogen and phosphate are present in all ecosystems and nature knows how to hold them and make them readily available when they are needed.   Therefore, fertilization in itself is not inherently bad, but the type and amount of fertilization is the key to producing healthy lawns and eliminating water pollution.  Safe lawn fertilizer is the means to a green and blue world for u and the wildlife.
